The Blindspot of Traditional Psychotherapy
January 23, 2025The Importance of Self-Care for Your Mental Health.

An article written for thesoothe.co on the importance of self-care for your mental health.
Social media is flooded with #selfcare content including luxury hotel stays, opulent spa treatments and people laying down somewhere exotic on curated feeds. It’s good for me! I deserve it! Because I’m worth it! scream the accompanying captions. Self/care is undeniably vital. Yet, its link to opulence, expense and apparent acts of gratification are not necessarily guaranteeing a holistic and deep experience of internal bliss.
Self-care is an important aspect of holistic and true health that nourishes the deepest folds of our soul. It cannot be achieved through means of self-absorption and narcissism, but involves an intentional act of soul searching, and reconnection with our brain and body. In other words, self-care is not lifestyle. It’s a holistic and authentic way of living life whilst being in contact with our soul’s, mind’s and body’s true needs and desires. It can often be an hour soaking in our bathtub with lavender essential oils and sea salt, releasing the stressors of the day. “People who genuinely practise self-care, take care of their physical health through exercise and eating healthy food, not for the purpose of falling under the socially constructed boxes of beauty, but for the nourishment of our bodies and brains,” says Maria Micha, psychologist, psychotherapist and hypnotherapist.
